Tihany Abbey and castle

The Benedictine Abbey of Tihany was established by Andrew I of Hungary for the honor of Saint Aignan and the Virgin Mary. The 3 nave basilica was built at this time, behind its sanctuary the crypt was built for the burial of king Andrew I. The compound forming a closed quadrilateral monastery was transformed into a fortified building of military function during the Ottoman conquest, and it became a border castle in 1534 thus monastic life ending here for a long time. The construction of the baroque friary started in 1719. The splendid building totally renovated in our time bears the title Crown of the Balaton deservedly. We created the reconstruction based on the research of Gergely Buzás for the brand new exhibition of Tihany Abbey.
